About Modern Body Contrology™

Modern Body Contrology was conceptualized in the fall of 1990 when Barbara Gerson first introduced David Mooney to Pilates. Barbara, very active in the Kansas City community, had been traveling to New York many times a year to meet with Sylvia Waters, Judith Jamison, and others to help establish the Friends of Ailey outreach program in Kansas City. While in New York City, Barbara began taking Pilates lessons with Romana Kryzanowska. Falling in love with the system, Barbara began trying to find the correct individual to train with Romana, become certified, and bring Pilates to Kansas City. David Alan Mooney would become that individual.

After apprenticeship certification by Romana in the Pilates Method of Contrology™, David returned to Kansas City and opened Modern Body Contrology™. MBC was founded exclusively as a Pilates studio in 1991, at a time when the Pilates Method was virtually unheard of. (At the time, there were less than 100 instructors worldwide.) MBC was the first and only Pilates studio in the Mo-Kan bi-state area for many years. From 1991 to 2001, MBC was located at 9308 Dearborn, Overland Park, Kansas.

Among the clients at this location were many dancers from the State Ballet of Missouri (currently Kansas City Ballet), including its then ballet mistress, Una Kai. At their request, David began teaching mat classes to the professional dancers at The Westport Allen Center, their then home. This was the first Pilates mat class offered in Kansas City. In 1996, David became the first instructor in the Mo-Kan bi-state area to teach mat classes in a health club setting when he began teaching at the Woodside Tennis and Health Club. Hundreds of Kansas Citians received their first introduction to Pilates in this way.

In 1998, David broadened his approach to fitness and incorporated the Gyrotonic Expansion System into his studio. The knowledge gained from both modalities, working together, offers the student even greater results than either system can offer on its own.

In the summer of 2001, in order to offer the opportunity of quality instruction to a greater number of clients, Modern Body Contrology moved to its present location at 10455 Deerfield Lane in Olathe, Kansas. The private studio sits on a four-acre retreat in the prestigious Millcreek Farms subdivision. While just a quarter mile away from highway access, MBC™ offers its students the serenity of a little bit of country in the heart of the city. With floor to ceiling windows that look out on nature, clients enjoy a relaxing, nurturing workout amid the comforts of home.

The state-of-the-art studio boasts top-of-the-line, commercial-grade equipment, including 6 Balanced Body Reformer/Cadillac combination units, high and low chairs, a ladder barrel, a spine corrector, small and medium barrels, magic circles, a foot corrector, and all auxiliary Pilates equipment. Gyrotonic Expansion System equipment includes the Pulley System Combination Unit, consisting of the handle unit, the pulley system (tower), and the multifunctional exercise bench. Additionally, the studio is equipped with a full line of free weights and a treadmill.

All in all, the superior instruction, top-notch equipment, and private location combine to offer MBC™s clients an unparalleled Pilates workout experience!
